Berta Rojas: Paraguayan Classical Guitarist Live in Manila & Cebu

As you know, me and my hubby met in a choir group some 7 years ago. I'm not good at singing but I would be happy if I will be given a chance to enhance this skill. As for my hubby, he is really into singing, classical Italian song that is. I could still remember him bringing me to watch classical concerts when we were still dating back then. And that is the kind of date that he enjoys. Hard to please, huh?
I saw this poster and it says classical guitarist live in Manila. I was thinking of surprising my hubby for a date which he might be interested in. And yes, we are going! Let me tell you more about this guitar concert.

Concert Dates

Berta Rojas, one of the world's most outstanding female classical guitarists, known for her impeccable technique and innate musical mastery will hold concerts in two places:

Manila on May 15 (Thursday) at 8pm in the Meralco Theatre and
Cebu on May 17 (Saturday) at 8pm in the Marcelo Fernan Hall in Lahug

The concerts are jointly organized by the Independent Philippine Art Ventures, Inc. and the Arts Council of Cebu Foundation.

Master Class

Prior to that, this Paraguayan virtuoso will conduct a special Master Class on May 14, 2014 from 3 to 6pm at the Cedar Room, Richmonde Hotel Ortigas where her official residence in Manila will be. The master class will be open, free of charge, to six (6) students and enthusiasts, for 30 minutes each, that qualify in a transparent and competitive process. In a master class, open to a public audience, the student plays a chosen piece before a virtuoso and the latter evaluates technique, style, interpretation and posture. It is usually a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the student.
Going back to the concert, Ms. Rojas, described by the Washington Post as "Guitarist extraordinaire," will play a mainly classical repertoire with a taste of jazz and salsa.

Special guests for the Manila concert are Ramoncito Carpio, the country's most internationally awarded classic guitarist and Triple Fret, a trio composed of Marga Abejo, Jenny de Vera, and Iqui Vinculado.

Carpio started to play guitar at age 12 and formally studied at age 17 at the extension program of the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Music. He earned his Bachelor's degree under the tutelage of Prof. Lester Demetillo. He took his Master of Music degree at Philippine Women's University (PWU) School of Music under the guidance of Prof. Benchito Cariño and is pursuing his doctorate in music with Dr. Angelito Agcaoili in the same school.

Triple Fret is an all-women classical-contemporary guitar trio that has captivated the hearts of music lovers all over the Philippines with their refreshing brand of music, performance and love for the classical guitar. Its members received training in the premiere music schools of the country, namely the University of the Philippines College of Music and the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music. The women have brought the appreciation of the classical guitar throughout the country to new heights.

This event is spearheaded by the University of Santo Tomas Music Conservatory Student Council under the leadership of Mary Rose Luzande.
